    morning db02,

Capture quality will basically depend on 2 things:
    * source - ie, DVD, Satalite, LD, Cable, VHS,
    * capture card (CC)

You could have the greatest CC, but if your source is not of good quality,
    the you're shooting your toes'zeez.

Also note, that even if you do have a great combo, CC and Source.. if
you are having MB/CPU/IRQ etc. issues, they can degrade your final
call on quality in the form of ie, frame drops, or reduced capture resolution
    etc.

A Capture card is the last on the chain w/ respect to quality. It's always
    your source first, then CC.

So far, (IMO and having used a great many of them) all CC produce very
    good quality.

    hope that helped some.

    More than likely.

A splitter, as you put it, seems to be having an negative affect on your
capture quality (even while your watching tv normally)
If you really need to have your source split, then perhaps a video amp
would be recommended. I have a Radio Shack 4 port video amp, and
my signal seems to be as clear on ALL 4 sources ie, tv, pc monitor,
    2nd pc montor (2 pcs) and 3rd ?

I do know that these devices sometimes interfere w/ some capture card
devices, but w/ my analog cards, it seems to be very good with them all.
no problems so far. However, on my ADVC-100, I can't have it connected.
It gives this DV device some "black'n blue" when connected to it and
others' connected to this unit at the same time. I just found this out.
But, other than that (ADVC-100) you should be allright w/ using this amp.
There are some benefits to having 4 distribution ams though..

The unit I have is the Radio Shacks Cat No: 15-1172 @ $42

Maybe someone else can advise another scenario otherwise. But, this
setup has ben working for me for quite a while now.

just remember certain networks broadcast with more bandwidth than others. some stations may come in real clear and others not.
the larger networks on my cable, for some reason have alot of rgb noise, and other smaller networks come in crystal clear. go figure!
reception has an enormus effect on final cap quality.
